Overmono’s ‘Good Lies’: A Masterclass in British Dance Music

Brothers Tessela & Truss, also known as Overmono, released their debut album, Good Lies, earlier this month on the 12th of May via XL Recordings. The Welsh duo announced via Instagram in January that the 12-track album is a “love letter” to their sound, representing 12 years of collaborative music-making, including singles such as So U Kno, Everything U Need, and Blind Date.

After seven years into their career together, they have finally launched a debut album. It features a vocal sample from CASISDEAD in the album’s closing track, Calling Out, and from Tirzah on Is U – the first single to be released from the album.

Overmono has been dominating the underground scene for the past two or three years and is gradually breaking into the mainstream (if they haven’t already), having become icons of British dance music.

In celebration of the album’s release, the duo hosted a free party from 2-11 pm at The Blue Posts Pub in Soho, London, appropriately named The Two Dogs in a nod to their regular Doberman mascots. They distributed scratch cards that attendees could use to win drinks on the day.

As a whole, the album is masterfully constructed, blending chopped-up vocals with their customary garage and techno influences. This mix of previously released work and brand-new material propels Overmono far beyond their regular dancefloor sound. The standout tracks on the album are Good Lies, Calon, and So U Kno, which still feels as freshly innovative as its first release in June 2021. The album evokes a range of emotions in the listener, from euphoria to melancholy.
