Tribal Spotlight: Patrick Topping // TRICK
Tribal is honoured to present Patrick Topping – all night long – as part of Season Two, launching as a full capacity, warehouse show at Hope Works, Sheffield.
As part of our launch, we’re exploring each artist’s background, key influences, and top songs.
A Rocket-Fuelled Lift Off
Our next Spotlight features no other than Geordie born and bred superstar, Patrick Topping, who has been ascending to fame with his artisan production and DJ sets since the tender age of 19.
Topping now boasts over fifty releases on labels such as Hot Creations, Truesoul, Relief Records and Hottrax, as well as producing hit remixes for The Streets, Sam Fender, Tiga and Madison Avenue, just to name a few.
In his earlier years as a teenager, Patrick Topping was heavily influenced by electronic and dance music, but it was the eclectic sounds of Màkina music — also known as New Monkey — that made a real impact on him.
The influence of Màkina paved the way for Topping’s liking of artists such as Tiësto and David Guetta. Following his first trip to Ibiza Topping’s love for music truly began to materialise, he was gifted his first set of decks and began an online production course with Point Blank.
Being Sharp, Saying Nowt
Most notable of Toppings tracks include the timelessly iconic, ‘Be Sharp, Say Nowt’, the collaboration with Curtis Alan Jones, AKA Green Velvet / Cajmere on ‘Voicemail’, and ‘Forget’— Ibiza’s track of the season for 2014.
In more recent years, Topping has released more innovative and grown sounds on EP’s such as ‘Turbo Time’, ‘Dungeon Freak’ and ‘Rocket Fuel’. Patrick has even collaborated with his wife Hayley on tracks ‘Disco Hits’ and ‘New Reality’, the latter of which earned him “The Hottest Record in the World” on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 Dance show back in October of 2020.
In his latest three-track house power anthem production, the ‘Planet Session’ EP, he has even experimented with using his own vocals— Topping shows no signs of slowing down in terms of his musical development.
Living in Paradise
When he isn’t busy producing or DJing, Topping often takes to Ibiza in the Summer months from his home of North Shields, for his residency at Paradise, formerly at DC10, which is due to move to Amnesia when the white island reopens in its full glory once again.
Considerably a globetrotter, he has also played at festivals across the pond such as Coachella, Ultra, Tomorrowland, Movement Detroit and the Winter Music Conference; as well as European festivals such as Awakenings, Kappa FuturFestival and Lovebox.
That does the TRICK
As if the impressive succession of Topping’s high impact tracks was not enough to sustain his status as a universally respected and in-demand DJ, the emergence of his label TRICK in 2019 was the cherry on top.
Although TRICK was initially launched to showcase Topping’s evolving soundscapes, it now also promotes new artists who are emerging onto the music scene. And as of last week, the highly anticipated producer Ewan Mcvicar has not only begun to climb up the UK’s Official Trending Chart, but his track, ‘Tell Me Something Good’, has become the first track produced by TRICK to ever make it on to the UK Charts.
An unstoppable source of floor-filling tracks
TRICK’s effort to carve out its own musical niche within the expanding dance community is clearly paying off and earning itself a reputation as an unstoppable source of floor-filling tracks.
But what is most interesting about the label is that it actively champions a varied sonic palette; with a catalogue ranging from electronica to disco influences and obviously some good old house. The spectrum of sounds that TRICK encompasses is reflected in the line-ups curated by Topping — with Green Velvet, Fjaak and Elliot Adamson springing to mind.
Topping it off
Patrick Topping is one of the most influential artists of the moment, and he knows it. Not only does his ability to fill any dance floor impress us but his continued efforts to push up-and-coming artists to the forefront, whilst also producing exciting events, showcases his versatility and huge influence on the music industry.
The Tribal team has hand-picked three of Topping’s tracks, one recent release, one underrated track, and an all-time classic.
